Rochdale’s Buckley Menswear store

Rochdale’s Buckley Menswear store are still celebrating success following their nomination for a Drapers Independent award by the iconic Drapers Trade Magazine.

The prestigious awards ceremony was a glitzy affair held in London back in September but proud owner, Phil Buckley is still floating on cloud nine to have even been shortlisted for such a sought after award.

Named as one of the ten finalists for the ‘Best new Retailer’ category is a huge accolade particularly for such a fledgling business which only opened it’s doors in November 2018.  To be nominated by Drapers less than one year later was an honour.

Sitting proudly on Rochdale’s historic South Parade, Buckley was recognised by Drapers Independent Awards which celebrate the best fashion retailers and brands across the UK and Ireland.  The awards pay homage to customer service, innovation, grit and community spirit shown by the top independent multi-brand retailers.

With over 20 years’ experience working for a well-respected men’s outfitters under his belt, Phil Buckley branched out and opened his own store and following an extensive refurbishment programme, Buckley Menswear has now become a high-end retailer the town can be proud of.

Phil admitted that when he was first approached by Drapers he was a little blase as he expected to be one of a huge list of finalists.  “I am very pleased and humbled to be named as a finalist, I didn’t expect to win but was delighted to learn that I was one of only ten people in the country.  For a one-man independent in Rochdale, this is a big deal” adds Phil.

Flattered to be approached by Drapers earlier on in the year, Phil Buckley was asked to complete a nomination form, provide some background information about the shop and it’s ethos plus details of the multi-million pound regeneration of Rochdale town centre which has sparked such interest in the area and is driving shoppers to his store.

Admitting he was excited about the awards ceremony, Phil headed down to The Brewery in London on 11 September together with his wife.  “We had a fabulous day, we didnt win but it certainly didn’t take the shine off such a glamorous occasion”.
